[character]: Uriel
[character history / background]:

Angel Sanctuary is a story about how the combined stupid decisions of people (and angels and demons) managed to destroy the world. Uriel is one of those stupid people in love.

Uriel is one of the four elemental archangels, along with Michael, Jibrille and Raphael. He is the Guardian Angel of Earth, as well as the Angel of Justice and Angel of Death. Unlike the other angels, Uriel has dark colored wings (Setsuna described it as having "the color of earth") which doesn't really serve a purpose other than to mark him as the Guardian Angel of Earth. His job includes judging the souls of the dead, working under Zaphkiel as one of the Thrones and being a lawyer.

From what little of what was shown of Uriel's past, it can be assumed that he was a meek man who was obedient to Zaphkiel, even during the years when Zaphkiel was still a bloodthirsty angel who enjoyed killing the children that were born between angels. That's because love between angels was a sin and the children born from them had tendencies to have special powers and/or abnormalities.

[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: The end of volume 15. The trial of Sara Mudou ended with Uriel exposing Sevotharte for a fraud. At the same time, Sandalphon convinced Metatron to release him, and Michael rammed his ship into the Citadel of Law. The Citadel exploded from the impact.

And he thought to himself, if he were more like God, would she have loved him? It was blasphemy in itself, and he found himself fortunate that he could not speak those words. And besides, there was no one to hear him. In this realm there was only him, the equally silent flora and the ghouls who do not posses the faculties of language and rationality.

It was lonely in Uchuuju, but that was to be expected. Zaphkiel has certainly chosen a suitable place for him to repent and start over, without interfering with his job. On the first day, Uriel started with the basics. He made a house for himself. The plants in the realm lent him their strength. On the second day he added rooms. Status dictated that he have a large house but he wasn't the type to expand his house like Michael and Raphael. Instead he made a few rooms, and a few rooms inside those rooms. So the house was large inside but relatively smaller outside. On the third day, he made the doors and the keys. The doors now lead to different rooms depending on the color of key you use. The same door could lead you to the kitchen, the bedroom, his workshop, his office, etc. On the fourth day he readied his scythe, his cloak and all the equipment that marked him as the angel of Death. On the fifth day, he fielded all the souls into his abode and realized that his guilt made it harder for him to do his job. What right did he have to judge these souls when he himself after-- He shook his head and proceeded to shut himself in his workshop. On the sixth day, he had completed his mask. It wasn't so hard to program plant life into alter his brainwaves. It was very similar to programming a computer, since technology tended to follow the flow of nature. It was made to rid him of all his emotions, so that he may judge rationally and merciless. It was on the seventh day that the mask took over and that was the end of that.

At least, that was how it was supposed to work. For days he was able to separate the good from the bad, send them to their respective realms and plot out their reincarnations. But plants, unlike computers, were living things. So his mask wasn't powered by wires and programming, but was a small ecosystem of fauna. For it to be unstable was natural. Sometimes it had cracks. Sometimes it would slip off. Sometimes it needed to rest and heal. Sometimes it regarded his face as a natural part of it's system and tried to assimilate with it. And so he had to take it off occasionally.

Having all his feelings returned to him, he realized how lonely he really was. Knowing that he deserved it didn't alleviate his situation at all. So he built things. They were small things at first, creatures no larger than rabbits who can function with the basic plantlike intelligence for short periods of time. They amused him. They distracted him. But they could not distract him from that voice.

"I love her."

Another fallen angel in his realm, destined to deteriorate into a ghoul.

"She may not love me back but I love her."

It was a familiar cry. It could have come from himself if he didn't know any better. But angels were forbidden to love each other, in the more worldly sense of the term. Curious about his situation, he asked him:

*Child, child. What did you do? Tell me about it and be judged.*

"I don't remember. All I know is that I'm here because of her."

Ah, so that was it. Perhaps he acted upon his love and she spurned him. It was a similar story to his.

"She hates me. She's the reason why I'm here. And even so I love her. I want to protect her."

That was when their stories started to differ. While Uriel might have claimed time and time again to love... Her, he wanted her to be his and his alone. This soul... It dawned on Uriel that this soul has been here before him, and that these thoughts were the only things keeping this soul from deteriorating into a ghoul. Because if he became a ghoul he would forget everything. He would forget her.

Uriel admired his spirit, and hated himself for his own weakness.

*I can't bring you back to heaven. I can't revive the dead.* Uriel admitted. *But if you want to protect something, if you want to continue on living in a different form, then come here and stay with me until the day that we can find someone to deliver your message to your woman.* The soul curled himself into a ball in his hand, agreeing to his terms.

And so Uriel created his first companion, the dragon NyddHogg, to protect his realm and to do what he could not.
